A descriptive study to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding immunization schedule among the mothers of under five children in community health centre, Mirza, Assam
Background: According to UNICEF (2020), immunization plays a crucial role in enhancing child survival rates and significantly helps in reducing the impact of infectious diseases. Each year, an estimated two million children die before reaching the age of five, many from illnesses that could have been prevented through timely vaccination. It has also been reported that around 19.3 million children did not receive complete vaccination, putting them at risk of vaccine-preventable illnesses, which contribute to both morbidity and mortality. Nearly half of these under-vaccinated children are concentrated in just three countries, with India being one of them. Immunization remains one of the most effective, affordable, and impactful strategies for protecting children against several preventable diseases.
Mothers play a pivotal role in the overall health and development of their children for the successful implementation of programs aimed at ensuring a child’s wellbeing. So, if mother is made more aware about the immunization and its benefits of infants and other health care practices to improve the status of severity of diseases which can prevented by vaccination2
Methods: A descriptive study was done by using purposive sampling technique which consisted 60 mothers of children under five years of age. The study was conducted at the Community Health Centre, Mirza, Assam. Data were collected by administering structured interview questionnaire along with an attitude questionnaire based on a Likert scale. The collected data were analyzed employing both descriptive and inferential statistical methods.
Results: The finding of the study indicated that the chi-square value for immunization schedule status was 60.43, which is greater than p value = 9.49. A significant association was observed between the knowledge scores and immunization schedule status at the 0.05 level of significance, leading to the acceptance of the research hypothesis (H?).
Conclusion: Out of 60 mothers, the majority, 47 (78.3%), demonstrated average knowledge, 3(5%) exhibited good knowledge and 10(16.7%) had poor knowledge regarding immunization schedule. These findings indicate a need for increased awareness among mothers about the proper immunization schedule.
